KNOXVILLE (WATE) – An astronaut from Tennessee is spending the Thanksgiving holiday orbiting the earth on the International Space Station.

University of Tennessee graduate and Mount Juliet native Barry “Butch” Wilmore is the Commander of the International Space Station expedition 42 crew.

In a video posted by N.A.S.A., Wilmore says he’s thankful scientists on the ground helping them perform experiments for the benefit of mankind.

“It’s been a busy couple of months, but it’s been very rewarding,” says Wilmore.

Wilmore says this Thanksgiving his fellow astronauts will be feasting on dehydrated turkey, cornbread dressing and cranberry pie.

“Of course, I’m from Tennessee, so I grew up drinking sweet tea,” says Wilmore, “so we’ll have a little bit of that as well.”

The astronaut has a little over three months left on the International Space Station. He says their schedule is jam-packed with several arm operations, experiments and space walks.

“It’s an exciting time and a time to be thankful for being here,” says the Tennessee native. “Happy Thanksgiving, may it be a blessed day for you, don’t eat too much.
