Fountain City first responders celebrate Thanksgiving at fire station

"It's just another day at the fire station for us," said Captain Buhl. "You want to be at home with your family, but it's just part of the job. We knew that when we signed on."

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – Rick Buhl, Jeff Nichols, and Cory Darnell each have their own favorite things about Thanksgiving, but they’re celebrating a little differently than most this year.

While many people are spending the day with family, they are working at Station 15 to keep others safe.

“It’s just another day at the fire station for us,” said Captain Buhl. “You want to be at home with your family, but it’s just part of the job. We knew that when we signed on.”

This is the third Thanksgiving in a row these fire fighters have been working, but they say they’ve gotten used to spending the day with their second family.

“They do silly things and, you know, just act goofy like a normal family would,” said Cory Darnell.

It wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without a turkey. A local girl scout troop donated a Thanksgiving meal to the fire fighters.

“We are making a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. We’re having turkey and dressing and all the trimmings that go with it,” said Captain Buhl.
