KODAK (WATE) – A man allegedly shot his ex-girlfriend and then took his own life in Kodak Thursday night, according to the Sevier County Sheriff’s Office.
The Sevier County Sheriff’s Office says it was called to a home on Bent Road in Kodak just after 10 p.m. for a report that two people had been shot.
Officers found Browning Burgess, 69 of Newport, dead in the living room of a gunshot wound to the head. Audrey McCroskey, 46, was semi-conscious in a bedroom with a gunshot wound to the face.
A witness who was present at the time of the shooting told officers Burgess was McCroskey’s estranged boyfriend and he had come to the home around 30 minutes prior to the shooting. The witness said the two got into a verbal argument, then Burgess went to the rear of the home and shot McCroskey. He then returned to the living room and turned the gun on himself.
Deputies say McCroskey had taken out a temporary order of protection against Burgess on October 15 and he had been due in court on Friday.
McCroskey was taken to UT Medical Center where she is listed in critical condition.
The investigation is ongoing.
