KNOXVILLE (WATE) – If you looking for Mr. or Ms. Right by using a local or online dating service, there are some potential pitfalls.

Dating services may promise to find you the person of your dreams and while some have found happiness with the services, others have been disappointed in the quality of matches.

Some of the recent matchmaker complaints include failure to match singles with specified preferences.

For example, some were matched with people who lived too far away, or non-smokers were matched with people who smoked.

Some companies will say they have a database of thousands of singles, but customers will complain they didn’t receive the promised number of dates or introductions.

Be skeptical of advertising claims such as “beautiful singles just like you,” or “exclusive network of people.”

In other words, don’t fall in love with the advertising.

Some scams that match men with foreign women typically include a request to send money to pay for a trip to the U.S. What often happens is the woman never makes the trip and the money can’t be recovered.

Online dating services normally require a minimum membership period and charge a monthly fee, but remember membership is often renewed automatically when it expires.

So, understand how to cancel your account once it expires and check the contract closely and take the necessary steps so you are not automatically enrolled if you don’t want to be for another year.

Remember, some companies won’t let you cancel just because you are unhappy with your dates or dissatisfied with the service.
