MURFREESBORO (WATE) — Two touchdown runs and 208 total rushing yards by Dennis Rogan, plus a key fumble recovery by defensive end Terrence Cobb, gave Knoxville Fulton a 24-14 win over David Lipscomb in the Blue Cross Bowl Saturday at MTSU.
It is the Falcon’s third state 3A title in the last four years.
Lipscomb dominated play through much of the first half until Cobb, the defensive MVP, punched through the Mustang line and picked up a fumbled handoff. He then sprinted 47 yards for a score. The Falcons made it an 8-0 lead with a two-point conversion.
After being held to just 41 yards in the first half, Rogan, the offensive MVP, took over in the second half with his two touchdowns. His first came with 2:48 left in the third quarter when he scored on an 18-yard run.
Lipscomb then quickly mounted a comeback with an 84-yard touchdown and two-point conversion, then got the ball back again after a Fulton punt. But a 55-yard screen pass was nullified on an illegal block call and Lipscomb punted back to Fulton.
Rogan and the Fulton offensive squad took over with an 8-play, 63-yard drive that ended with Rogan’s second touchdown, a 7-yard run with 3:57 remaining. The Falcons again made a two-point conversion, pushing the score to 24-8.
The Mustangs managed one more touchdown with 2:51, but their two-point conversion attempt failed, making the final score 24-14.
Fulton finishes the season at 14-1. Lipscomb ends at 13-2.
The Mustangs have lost five of their last six appearances in the Blue Cross Bowl.
