MURFREESBORO (AP) – Jackson Christian intercepted six passes Friday to stop Friendship Christian 19-13 to win its first-ever TSSAA Class 1-A championship in the BlueCross Bowl.
Rashad Rayner, who was named the game’s most valuable defensive player, led the secondary with three of the interceptions.
The Eagles’ defense also scored a touchdown when Greg Wood returned an interception 45 yards with 7:51 left in the third quarter.
Jackson Christian, who are 12-3, also had one interception return for a touchdown negated by a holding penalty.
The Eagles broke open a scoreless game to start the third quarter. Clay Fowler tossed a 15-yard scoring strike to Tanner Perkins.
Friendship Christian, who are 14-and-1, cut into the lead in the third quarter with a one-yard run by Bryant Alsup. That sliced the Eagles’ lead to 13-6 with 1:57 remaining.
Reserve quarterback Matt Hudson capped a 67-yard drive to put Jackson Christian up 19-6 to start the fourth.
Jon Miller’s four-yard pass to Adam Stephens pulled Friendship Christian to 19-13 with four minutes left.
